Treatment & Diagnosis Services

The University Medical Center Freiburg has made the diagnosis and treatment of patients with chronic pain a particular priority.

The Interdisciplinary Pain Centre specialises in the treatment of the following diseases and pain syndromes:

Pain in the area of the whole spinal column

  • e.g. caused by protruding or slipped intervertebral disks
  • in degenerative changes
  • residual pain after spinal and intervertebral disk operations

Head and facial pain

  • migraine
  • cluster headaches
  • trigeminal neuralgia
  • residual pain after surgery in the oral, dental and jaw area after brain and skull operations (also shunt operations)

Pain caused by mono- and polyneuropathy

  • herpes zoster neuralgia
  • stump and phantom pain
  • in diabetes and other metabolic disorders
  • infections
  • after chemotherapy

Restless Leg Syndrome

Central pain e.g.

  • after stroke
  • after injuries to the spinal cord

Complex regional pain syndrome type I and II (formerly Morbus Sudeck and Causalgia)

Special treatment techniques:

  • Computer tomography and fluoroscopy-assisted cold (cryoneurolysis) and heat (radiofrequency) denervation treatment in chronic back pain with disorders of the small vertebral joints
  • Withdrawal treatment in overuse of painkillers
  • Re-adjustment of drug dosages
  • Implantation of pump systems for intrathecal therapy (e.g. morphine, baclofen and ziconotide)

Neuromodulation: Occipital nerve stimulation – Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) in

  • cluster headaches
  • other therapy-resistant headaches
  • severe pain of the locomotor system
  • severe pain in peripheral vascular disease
  • e.g. circulatory disorders of the arms and legs
  • refractory angina in coronary heart disease
