It is a pleasure to welcome you to our Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endocrinology, and Infectious Diseases here at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. Our in-patient unit has a capacity for about 100 patients and our outpatient unit cares for 100-150 patients with various liver diseases every day.

The deparment employs approximately 100 doctors and 250 paramedical personnel. Our patients benefit from extensive clinical experience, a broad spectrum of medical services and state of the art technical equipment in providing the most advanced preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic options.

Our primary goal is to guarantee our patients the most prompt and effective medical assistance. We have long-standing experience in caring for patients from different countries and our team does everything possible to meet the needs and expectations of all of our patients.


Diagnostics & Treatment Services

We are specialized in the diagnostics and treatment of liver diseases and their various causes, especially hepatitis B, C and D as well as other causes, incl. alcohol, obesity, diabetes mellitus and others. We are further specialized in the treatment of patients with liver cirrhosis and its complications, such as ascites, variceal bleeding as well as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In this context we have extensive experience in the treatment of primary or secondary liver tumors by radiofrequency thermoablation, transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and drugs as well as the treatment of the complications of portal hypertension by the implantation of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic stents (TIPS).

The treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, including pancreatitis and colorectal coarcinoma is a further focal point in our division. These diseases have unfortunately become more common in recent years. Our Department carries out all diagnostic procedures and therapeutic strategies, including chemotherapies, antibody and drug therapies, radiofrequency thermoablation, gastrointestinal stent implantations and others.

Our experience includes a wide range of gastroenterological/endoscopic, diagnostic as well as therapeutic interventions:

  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)

  • Push enteroscopy and video capsule imaging of the small bowel

Our "Liver Center“ specializes in all state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in cooperation with the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg as well as the Departments of Oncology, Radiology, Radiation Oncology, and others.

Our qualified doctors in the Endocrinology and Diabetology Division consult patients with diseases in this field. Here we provide medical services in the diagnosis and treatment of all endocrine disorders, including diabetes mellitus and thyroid dysfunction. We also offer special consultation for patients with osteoporosis and patients suffering from obesity, as well as a training program for patients suffering from diabetes mellitus which include nutrition and physical exercise programs.
