Intensive care

Interdisciplinary cooperation plays an important role in our intensive care stations. Our cardiologists, along with experienced doctors from other departments of the Medical Center – University of Freiburg, look after patients with life-threatening, internal and in particular cardiac diseases.

Range of services

  • With regard to heart disease therapy, we are developing an inter-regional referral center for treatment of acute myocardial infarction (MI).
  • We serve about 200-300 patients each year (excluding clinical resuscitation). Therapeutic hypothermia is used as standard treatment. In this, the patient’s body temperature is cooled to below normal, the aim being to lower the metabolism and thus reduce brain damage.
  • We care for patients with acquired or congenital heart disease (myocarditis etc.) just as well as we do those waiting for urgently needed heart and lung transplants.
  • For ventilation therapy, all conventional invasive and non-invasive ventilation modes are employed. In cooperation with the pulmonology department we run a Weaning Center (for weaning from mechanical ventilation).
