We are building a clinic for the future!

The new pediatric clinic at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg.
pediatric clinic

Over the next five years we are building a future-oriented pediatric clinic for the 21st century to provide university medicine as well as clinical routine and emergency care; this facility will have more than 25,000 m2 at its disposal and will comprise 175 beds to treat 75,000 sick children and adolescents annually on the basis of an investment volume of approximately 120 million Euros. The newly built pediatric clinic will be directly connected to the University’s gynecological clinic and the premature neonatal intensive care unit.

Based on scientifically well-founded, innovative concepts of health care provision, the construction of our clinic is a beacon project in Germany and Europe. For pediatric medicine in Freiburg, this venture creates a new impetus in a remarkable 150-year success story.

With the construction of this clinic we are laying the foundation, internationally, for a pediatric high-performance center with treatment options that provide optimal chances of recovery and development for children and adolescents from all over the world.

New impulses generated by innovative and qualitative health care provision concepts

A pediatric clinic requires more than the construction of an ordinary hospital. That is why our internationally unique health care provision concept unites high performance medicine with holistic care in an innovative infrastructure that suits the needs of all children and adolescents of every age group. We focus thereby on humane and individualized strategies in providing care, fostering the physical and mental well-being of the child and adolescent, respectively, and supporting the parents.

For this reason we also speak of the parent-child-patient, because the parents and families of our young patients are an important component of their recovery. This means that with our qualitative health care provision concept we also provide for the maintenance of the health of the parents and the whole family.

The elements of Freiburg’s beacon project – healing environment:

Room for Upgrowth, Development and Normality

  • RUN-Cluster (Room for Upgrowth, Development and Normality) – an independent, ward-connecting care provision unit which is dedicated to nourishing mental well-being and provides space for education and schooling as well as for encounter and for common meals for our children, adolescents and their parents.
Anti-Waiting Area

  • Parent-Child-Patient-Buffet – which allows the family to share meals and be together.
  • Anti-Waiting Area (out-patient centers) – an area where children, adolescents and their families can find precisely the diversion and relief they need during their out-patient stay.
Patient Library

  • Patient Library – tailored to the age-specific developmental needs, it advances the skills of our children and adolescents.
  • Space for Emotional Security and Care – patient rooms that foster spatially and emotionally the closeness of parents and their child while at the same time leaving enough space for both.
The Forum of Health Education

  • The Forum of Health Education and Health Promotion with an integrated family center – develops the competence of the entire family with respect to health care and its provision.
  • The Centralized "Working World" – areas that maintain closeness to patient care: open interdisciplinary rooms for all staff members promote the inter-professional exchange in the daily routine of the clinic.
Research Labs

  • Research Labs that maintain proximity to patient care – expedite the prompt feedback between research and patient care for better recovery.
  • Sustainability – guaranteed by our 100% Tail Wind Model.

For future medical care of children, adolescents and their families, our new, innovative concept means: quicker diagnosis, shorter treatment sequences, less stress and more security. We are treating sick children and adolescents at the highest level and developing new treatment strategies that are globally unique.

The future clinic goes far beyond standard health care

Our concept of this future clinic extends far beyond providing standard health care. We are committed to the best possible health care provision for our young patients and their families – giving the opportunity for the quickest possible recovery, for further age-appropriate development, for a home-like environment.

To this end, we are rallying supporters and sponsors whose donations will be allocated to 100% for the construction of the new clinic:
