Fast track liver surgery

What is the Fast Track Program in hepatobiliary surgery?

The Fast Track Program for Hepatobiliary Surgery has been successfully implemented at our Department of General Surgery in Freiburg. By optimizing perioperative care and reducing surgical stress, we aim to achieve optimal patient outcomes and promote faster recovery.

This multidisciplinary approach is based on evidence-based protocols for patient education, anesthetic management, perioperative pain control, and postoperative mobilization and nutrition. Whenever technically feasible, we employ minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopic or robot-assisted liver surgery.

Research has shown numerous benefits of the Fast Track Program, including reduced postoperative complications, shorter hospital stays, and improved patient satisfaction.

How can my relative or I participate in the Fast Track Program?

All patients undergoing hepatobiliary surgery are assessed for participation in the Fast Track Program. If necessary, the program will be adapted to meet your or your relative’s individual needs.

How does the Fast Track Program work?

You will receive an introduction to the Fast Track Program and a brochure during your appointment in our outpatient clinic. On the preoperative preparation day, our Fast Track Assistant (FTA), a specialized nurse, will provide a detailed explanation of the protocol. On this day, you will also meet with the anesthesiologists and surgeons. The FTA will visit you daily during your hospital stay and remain available for any questions after discharge.

Our goal, before, during, and after surgery, is to help you return to normal activities as quickly and safely as possible while minimizing stress on the body and ensuring excellent surgical outcomes.
