The Department of Neurosurgery of the Medical Center – University of Freiburg recently commissioned a state of the art hybrid operating room, the sixth of its kind in the department.

The operating room is equipped with a portable CAT scanner, known as the BodyTom CT. The device can be placed at the point of care and it generates high quality images for neurological procedures while reducing patient exposure to radiation by up to five times compared to a standard fixed-installation CAT scanner.

When performing stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, precise localization via neuronavigation is of the utmost importance. The BodyTom CT, one of many technologies which help make neurosurgery safer, allows surgeons to provide targeted relief of brain hemorrhaging, to precisely place venous catheters, and to implant screws to the exact millimeter during spinal surgeries. These ultra-modern techniques make brain and spinal surgery more precise and safer. The new operating room was designed for interdisciplinary use, and provides excellent working conditions for all medical professions.

The operating room is equipped with several large screens, which allow operating room and anesthesiology staff to follow an operation even when it is performed under a microscope. This additional feature further enhances team work during neurosurgeries.
