45 Years of Leadership: The Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg

The Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg (CCCF) at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg has been awarded the title “Oncological Center of Excellence” by German Cancer Aid for the fifth time.

The funding of 3.8 million euros over four years enables the center to continue its outstanding work in patient care and cancer research, and to continuously develop it further, as it has done since its foundation 45 years ago.

“The renewed funding is both an award and an incentive to offer our patients quality-centered university cancer medicine at all times and to continuously improve it through innovative research,” says Prof. Dr. Frederik Wenz, Chief Medical Officer of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.

Progress through collaboration and innovation

“We offer our cancer patients individual and interdisciplinary treatment with the latest therapy concepts. Through studies, they can benefit directly from new diagnostic and treatment approaches,” explains Prof. Dr. Stefan Fichtner-Feigl, Director and Spokesperson of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. “With the 45th anniversary of the center, we stand for consistently high quality in cancer diagnostics and therapy.”

37 different clinics, institutes and facilities of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg work closely together at CCCF. Regular conferences, known as tumor boards, are at the heart of the center. Here, doctors and scientists work closely together to find the best possible diagnostics and therapy planning. The tumor boards are also an important point of contact for referring physicians. The Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg has a total of 28 different tumor boards for the various types of cancer.

Numerous research programs promote the rapid transfer of new findings from the laboratory to the patient's bedside. “Thanks to the outstanding research at the Freiburg site, we are constantly succeeding in developing new therapeutic approaches that benefit patients worldwide,” says Prof. Dr. Christoph Peters, Scientific Director of the CCCF.

In addition to cutting-edge medical care, holistic care at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg also includes many important support services, from cancer prevention to psychological aftercare.
