Wada-Test

If the operative intervention is planned as a part of epilepsy treatment, the existing risks of post-surgical damages are defined in advance by means of Wada-test. Besides that on the basis of Wada-test results the operative intervention can be planned in such a way that all damages can be reduced to a minimum.

Intracarotid amobarbital tests are used in the Epilepsy Center with four main aims:

Speech dominance
By means of Amobarbital Sodium (Amytal) 140-170 mg injection to the carotid artery  the speech abilities of contralateral hemisphere are tested, i.e. speech consistency, speech understanding, ability to entitle, ability to repeat as well as reading and spontaneous speech.

Movement
By means of Amobarbital Sodium (Amytal) 140-170 mg injection to the carotid artery the ipsilateral motor function of contralateral hemisphere is tested. This test is designed to the patients who have the disordered motor function of cerebral cortex from an early age.

Memory
By means of Amobarbital Sodium (Amytal) 10-70 mg injection to the the anterior choroidal artery or the arteria cerebri posterior (selective Wada-test) the memory capability of the contralateral hippocamp (mental reserve capacity) is tested.

EEG
By means of Amobarbital Sodium (Amytal) 140-170 mg injection to the carotid artery the secondary bilateral synchronization is tested. This test is designed to the patients who have bilateral seizure pattern.
