Center for Chronic Immunodeficiency (CCI)

The Center for Chronic Immunodeficiency (CCI) is an internationally recognized institution in Germany where immunologists, infectious disease specialists, hematologists and transplant physicians collaborate to provide optimal care for immunodeficient patients of all age groups. The excellent translational research program allows rapid transfer of research results into state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment of patients with immunodeficiency. The CCI provides clinical and laboratory services to pediatric and adult patients with diseases of the immune system associated with infection susceptibility, inflammation or autoimmunity. This includes an active program of stem cell transplantation for pediatric and adult patients with severe immunodeficiencies.

The following patients are treated at the CCI:

  • Patients with genetic defects of the immune system
  • Patients who have recurrent or unusual infections
  • Patients with recurrent fever (fever syndromes)
  • Patients with early onset or unclassified inflammatory diseases
  • Patients with early onset or multiple autoimmune diseases
  • Patients with secondary immunodeficiency

Diagnostic & Treatment Services

  • Advanced immunological diagnostic services
  • Genetic diagnosis of all known immunodeficiencies
  • Genetic counseling for immunodeficiency
  • Numerous research programs offering innovative diagnostic tests
  • Next generation sequencing to detect so far unknown diseases

  • Therapy of immunodeficiency, infectious diseases
  • Intravenous and subcutaneous immunoglobulin therapy (incl. education)
  • Advice on complex immunosuppressive therapy
  • Stem cell transplantation for primary immunodeficiencies (in cooperation with the departments of Hematology/Oncology in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine)
  • Vaccination advice for patients with immunodeficiency
  • Second opinion
  • Clinical studies offering access to innovative treatments

We provide inpatient services and outpatient clinics for adult and pediatric patients and we have an interdisciplinary CCI conference for the discussion of complex cases. All diagnostic tests are available ‘on site’ at our institution.

"Understand, recognize, treat" - The goal of the CCI research program is to understand the mechanisms of immunodeficiency and to improve on the basis of this the diagnosis and therapy of immunodeficiency diseases. Therefore the two scientific cornerstones of the CCI are 1) basic research and 2) clinical studies in immunology and infection and immunity. The integration of both activities within our institution facilitates the transfer of knowledge from basic research to the improved patient care.
