Professor Dr. Christian Gratzke
Medical Director of the Department of Urology
Professor Dr. med. Christian Gratzke is a leading specialist in urology and an internationally recognized expert in robot-assisted urologic surgery, with particular expertise in the surgical treatment of prostate cancer. Since 2018, he has served as Medical Director of the Department of Urology at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg.
Professor Gratzke studied medicine at Ludwig Maximilian University Munich, with additional clinical training at the University of Vienna. He completed fellowships at renowned medical institutions in Australia, the United States, Sweden, Belgium, and Switzerland, including advanced fellowship training in robotic surgery at the ORSI Academy in Belgium.
He holds the title of Fellow of the European Board of Urology (FEBU).
Professor Gratzke’s clinical expertise covers the full spectrum of modern urology, with particular emphasis on robotic and minimally invasive surgery, urologic oncology, reconstructive urology, and the treatment of benign prostate enlargement. He is internationally recognized for his expertise in complex urological surgery, with a strong focus on organ-preserving techniques, precision surgery, and personalized treatment strategies.

Research & Innovation
Professor Gratzke is actively involved in clinical and translational research aimed at advancing the diagnosis and treatment of urological diseases. He has served as principal investigator and international coordinator of numerous multicentre clinical trials in prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and other lower urinary tract disorders.
His scientific work focuses on the molecular mechanisms of urological diseases, functional urology, and the development of innovative medical and surgical treatment approaches. His research contributes to more precise, personalized, and evidence-based care for patients with urological conditions.
Professor Gratzke has authored more than 200 original scientific articles, over 100 review papers, and numerous book chapters. His work has received widespread international recognition and has been supported by competitive research grants. He is the recipient of several prestigious scientific awards, including the Crystal Matula Award of the European Association of Urology, the Maximilian Nitze Award and the Mauermayer Award of the German Society of Urology, and the C.E. Alken Prize.
Professor Gratzke also serves as Editor-in-Chief of European Urology Focus and is involved in international scientific societies, editorial boards, and guideline committees, contributing to the advancement of modern urology worldwide.
