Cancer of the Renal Pelvis and Ureter: Diagnosis and Treatment

Cancer of the renal pelvis and ureter (upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma, UTUC) is a malignant tumor affecting the mucosal lining of the renal pelvis and ureter. These tumors are relatively rare and may present with symptoms such as blood in the urine (hematuria), flank pain, and discomfort during urination.
Early diagnosis and timely treatment are crucial for achieving a favorable prognosis and maintaining a high quality of life.

Modern Diagnostic Methods

Our department offers comprehensive diagnostic evaluations using advanced technology:

  • Ultrasound examination of the kidney to detect and assess tumors
  • Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for precise visualization of the tumor and assessment of metastatic spread
  • Ureteroscopy, enabling direct visualization and biopsy of affected areas in the ureter and renal pelvis
  • Blood tests for tumor markers (AFP, HCG, LDH) to monitor disease progression and treatment effectiveness

Treatment Options

Depending on the stage and location of the tumor, the following therapeutic approaches may be used:

  • Endoscopic tumor removal and laser ablation – gentle, minimally invasive procedures suitable for early-stage disease
  • Radical nephroureterectomy – removal of the affected kidney together with the ureter in cases of more advanced disease
  • Systemic chemotherapy – for metastatic or advanced stages
  • Immunotherapy – activation of the immune system to target cancer cells

Prevention and Follow-Up Care

We accompany patients through all stages of treatment and recovery:

  • Regular follow-up examinations to monitor treatment efficacy and detect recurrences in a timely manner.
  • Individualized follow-up and support programs as part of the rehabilitation process.
  • Lifestyle and preventive counseling to reduce the risk of disease recurrence.
