Professor Dr. Robert Thimme, MD acquired his education and gained many years of practical experience at leading medical institutions in Germany and the United States. His expertise is characterised by interdisciplinarity, innovation and strategic foresight. This has enabled him to establish strong professional alliances with leading global experts in gastroenterology.
Professor Thimme is member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Medical Association and has received numerous awards for his scientific achievements, including a Heisenberg Professorship.

The private outpatient clinic of Professor Thimme offers the complete diagnostic and therapeutic spectrum for the treatment of diseases of the liver, pancreas, oesophagus, gastrointestinal tract. The focus also lies in the treatment of gastrointestinal tumours, particularly through molecular-pathological individualised target therapies. These include hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiolar carcinoma, pancreatic carcinoma, oesophageal carcinoma, gastric carcinoma and colon carcinoma. A variety of important preventive check-up and screening options are also available at university level.

His research focuses on improving the understanding of immune responses to hepatitis viruses and SARS-CoV-2. His primary research interests include:
- T cell exhaustion and differentiation
- Immune response in viral hepatitis B and C and SARS-CoV-2 virus
- Immunobiology of hepatocellular carcinoma
