Electrophysiology/Arrhythmias

Rhythmology treats all forms of cardiac arrhythmia.

Cardiac arrhythmias can cause many symptoms such as heart stumbling, palpitations, dizzy spells or fainting (“syncope”) and even unexpected, sudden cardiac death.

Clinical electrophysiology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. This includes common clinical pictures such as atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, but also ventricular tachycardia, AV node and WPW tachycardia. Genetic diseases such as long QT interval syndrome are also treated.

  • The electrophysiological examination (EPU) shows the type and origin of the cardiac arrhythmia.
  • Sclerotherapy (ablation) can permanently eliminate almost all of these disorders, while electrical cardioversion can usually only end atrial fibrillation in the short term.
  • Electrical isolation of the pulmonary veins (pulmonary vein isolation) is used for the most common cardiac arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation, and can stabilize the normal rhythm in the long term in a high percentage of cases.
