More Space, Less Anxiety: Next-Generation MRI in Freiburg

The Medical Center – University of Freiburg has become the first medical center in Europe to introduce the Magnetom Flow.Elite P70 system from Siemens Healthineers. The new MRI system features a wider opening and a shorter tunnel, enhancing patient comfort during examinations while delivering highly precise diagnostic imaging.

With a 70 cm opening and a shorter tunnel, the Magnetom Flow.Elite P70 gives patients more space than many previous models. This design makes MRI examinations more comfortable, particularly for people with claustrophobia, limited mobility, a higher body weight, or chronic pain.

The system uses automated workflows and AI-supported image processing. This allows examinations to be performed more efficiently, more consistently, and, in many cases, faster. For patients, this means shorter preparation times, reduced noise, and a lower likelihood of repeat scans.

A second system will be installed at the University Heart Center Freiburg · Bad Krozingen. It will be particularly valuable for examining patients with cardiovascular diseases and implanted cardiac devices.

The new MRI system is also highly resource-efficient. Over its lifetime, it requires only about 0.7 liters of helium, compared with approximately 1,700 liters used by previous-generation systems. In addition, it consumes 30–40% less electricity.

“For many patients, MRI is associated with anxiety because of the confined space, the need to remain still for a prolonged period, or pain during positioning,” says Prof. Dr. Fabian Bamberg, Medical Director of the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology. “The new technology helps us better meet patients' individual needs by improving comfort during the examination while ensuring reliable image quality.”
