Brain tumors / neuro-oncology

The Department of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery at the Neurocenter of the University Medical Center Freiburg specializes in the care of patients with brain tumors. We provide comprehensive support – from initial consultation and diagnosis to treatment and long-term follow-up.

Each patient is cared for by an experienced interdisciplinary team. All cases are discussed in our weekly brain tumor conference, where specialists from neurosurgery, neurology, radiation oncology, neuroradiology, and medical oncology work together to determine the best possible treatment approach.

Through our active involvement in the German Glioma Network and the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), we offer treatments based on the latest medical research. When appropriate, patients may also be given the opportunity to participate in clinical studies.

Our goal is to clearly explain all available treatment options and to develop a personalized treatment plan that takes both medical findings and individual needs into account.

Our services include:

  • PET-guided stereotactic biopsies to clarify unclear brain lesions
  • Minimally invasive drainage of tumor cysts and implantation of catheters or shunts
  • Targeted internal radiation therapy (interstitial radiosurgery) using temporary iodine-125 implants for certain low-grade tumors and brain metastases
  • Stereotactic procedures to treat tumor-related hydrocephalus
  • Chemotherapy for brain tumors, including first-, second-, and third-line treatments
  • Access to clinical trials and innovative treatment studies
  • Treatment of pediatric brain tumors in close cooperation with the Center for Pediatrics at the University Medical Center Freiburg
  • Development of a structured treatment and follow-up plan, including imaging and therapy schedules
