Urethral Reconstruction Using Oral Mucosa

(Buccal Mucosa Urethroplasty)

Reconstructive surgery plays a key role in the treatment of urethral strictures – a condition characterized by narrowing of the urethral lumen, which can significantly impair urination and markedly reduce quality of life.

One of the most effective modern treatment options is urethroplasty using oral mucosa, most commonly harvested from the inner cheek (buccal mucosa).

Urethral strictures may develop as a result of trauma, inflammatory conditions, or congenital anomalies.

Surgical Technique

During the procedure, a small graft of mucosa is harvested from the inner cheek or, less commonly, the inner lip. After careful preparation, this graft is used to widen and reconstruct the narrowed segment of the urethra.

Oral mucosa is particularly well suited for urethral reconstruction because it is:

  • strong and elastic,
  • well vascularized,
  • resistant to infection and age-related changes.

Our Experience and Approach

The urology team at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg has extensive expertise and long-standing experience in performing buccal mucosa urethroplasty. This technique is well established, clinically proven, and provides durable restoration of urethral patency.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually requires a short hospital stay of several days to ensure appropriate postoperative monitoring and care.

Advantages of the Procedure

  • Use of robust, well-vascularized, and infection-resistant tissue (oral mucosa)
  • High clinical success rates with durable functional outcomes
  • Reduced risk of recurrence compared with alternative treatment methods

Preparation and Postoperative Follow-Up

  • Comprehensive preoperative consultation and individualized treatment planning
  • Regular postoperative follow-up examinations
  • Personalized rehabilitation programs aimed at maintaining long-term urethral patency and functional outcomes
