Operative Dentistry and Periodontology

Welcome to the Department of Operative Dentistry and Periodontology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.
We provide general dental care services for children and adults, focusing primarily on preventing, diagnosing and treating carious lesions and diseases of the periodontium (periodontology) and the pulp (endodontics).
Our operative restorative dentistry services include treating malformed, discoloured or fractured teeth, as well as replacing or repairing existing restorations with special aesthetic considerations, such as tooth-coloured restorations (fillings) and teeth whitening.
Diagnostic & Treatment
We specialise in preventive and restorative dentistry. During the initial examination, any necessary treatments can be identified and a personalised treatment plan developed. Carious and traumatic lesions, as well as malformed teeth, can be restored minimally invasively using tooth-coloured composite or ceramics. If requested, teeth can be whitened using a teeth whitening procedure.
Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with diseases of the tooth pulp and surrounding tissues. Endodontic therapy eliminates infection and protects the decontaminated tooth from future microbial invasion. Root canal treatment involves the removal of inflamed and infected pulp tissue. This involves shaping, cleaning and decontaminating the root canal system using tiny files and irrigating solutions, followed by filling the decontaminated canals. Most of these procedures can be carried out completely painlessly. However, occasionally, as with any dental or medical procedure, a tooth will not heal completely after the first treatment. In these cases, the tooth requires complicated and time-consuming endodontic retreatment (secondary treatment). Our endodontic specialists use the latest techniques to perform root canal treatment effectively.
The main focus of periodontology is maintaining the patient's periodontal health. At the beginning of treatment, oral hygiene motivation, information and instruction are combined with professional mechanical plaque removal. Deep periodontal pockets can be treated with non-surgical periodontal therapy, such as subgingival instrumentation, to remove subgingival calculus. For aggressive forms of periodontitis, adjunctive systemic antibiotic therapy can improve clinical conditions of periodontal patients. If inflammation persists, surgical treatment (periodontal surgery) is performed to expose the root surfaces for thorough cleaning. Regenerative periodontal surgery can be applied in specific situations. Afterwards, an adequate maintenance care programme is important for achieving a good long-term outcome. Marginal tissue recession with root surface exposure is often an aesthetic concern for patients. Different surgical techniques (plastic periodontal surgery) and grafting procedures can be used to achieve good coverage of the exposed root surface.
We also offer a wide range of paediatric dental treatments. We specialise in treating patients with epidermolysis bullosa, often in collaboration with the competence centre for epidermolysis bullosa, which is located within the Department of Dermatology. We can also use general anaesthesia for these patients. We also focus particularly on the restorative treatment of genetic or acquired dental anomalies.
