“Being able to walk again – it’s almost like being reborn.”
Stefan, 38 years old, Germany
Diagnosis: severe lower leg trauma and bone infection after motorcycle accident
Stefan, a father of two and an industrial mechanic, designs and assembles roller coasters and other technical systems for clients. In 2020, while returning from his farmland in the Markgräflerland region near Freiburg, Stefan was involved in a serious motorcycle accident that resulted in a complex open fracture of his lower leg.
Despite the trauma, Stefan managed to call emergency services himself and was rushed to the Medical Center – University of Freiburg, where he underwent emergency surgery. Complications followed: a severe bone infection developed, and even an amputation was considered.
Over 20 surgeries, including complex bone and skin grafts, were performed at the Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery. Eventually, his leg healed.
“After something like that, you realize – you only get one life,” says Stefan.
Today, he can walk almost normally again and continues working as an industrial mechanic, with the full support of his company.
